Major, indie, and independent record labels can be found by asking friends, family, or others that you know in the industry. Getting signed can be difficult with so many single artists and bands competing against you. Unsigned musicians can send a demo to a representative to see if they get called to continue further into the process of getting signed. Rock, hip-hop, R&B, rap, pop, country, and progressive genres will have a few companies they can choose to work with. Folk, jazz, gospel, punk, ska, hardcore and alternative rock, and metal will also have a variety of record labels that may be interested in signing new artists and bands. A debut album can take a lot of promotional work in order for people to go out and buy the CD. Getting your music on the radio by getting signed to a company is a great way to get your name out there and increasing your chances of success. All major, indie, and independent record labels will want to make money on those that they sign. If they don't sell albums and a contract ends that means that the band is able to be signed with a different label. Before deciding on who you want to go with do some research and see how well they do for debut albums and if they have a high success rate to making otherwise unknown artists into common household names. Only go with somebody you trust and truly believe will help you become successful. If not, talk with a different company and see if their procedures or ideas are better for you.

Record labels are companies that record and promote musical artists. Record labels also produce records, cassettes and CDs containing an artist's music. Record labels often pay for the production of the albums of the artists signed to them. Record companies promote through advertising, radio promotion, television promotion and on-line promotion the artists signed to them. Some record labels are considered major record labels. Major record labels often sign all kinds of artists and can spend a great deal of money on promoting their artists. Independent record labels have less money to promote their artists and often specialize in promoting and recording artists belonging to certain genres. Some record labels specialize in selling and promoting a certain genre of music, such as hip hop record labels, punk rock record labels, country record labels, and electronica record labels.
